1 - The Great "Dust" Illusion
The functional mushroom revolution is firmly rooted in modern wellness culture. From Silicon Valley biohackers to health-conscious seniors seeking cognitive longevity, the demand for fungi like Lion’s Mane (Hericium erinaceus), Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), and Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) has exploded.
However, this surge in popularity has created a marketplace flooded with confusing options. Walk down any supplement aisle, and you are faced with a dizzying array of choices: tinctures, powders, capsules, gummies, and even mushroom-infused coffees.
For the consumer, this variety presents a critical scientific question: Does the form matter? Is a gummy bear containing Reishi as effective as a sublingual liquid extract?
The answer, rooted in the complex biochemistry of fungal cell walls and human digestion, is a resounding yes.
The efficacy of a mushroom supplement is not defined solely by what is on the label, but by bioavailability: the proportion of the active substance that actually enters your circulation and has an active effect.
Most people go about optimizing their biology in the completely wrong way. They buy the "10:1 Extra Strength" Lion's Mane powder on Amazon because it has the highest number on the bottle.
They mix a scoop of brown dust into their morning coffee, feel absolutely nothing, and then conclude that "mushrooms don't work."
I’m not here to talk down on you. I’ve been there.
But as an engineer and researcher in analytical chemistry, I look at data, not marketing fluff. And the data is screaming something that the $50 billion supplement industry doesn't want you to know : You are paying for fiber, not medicine.
2 - The Biology of Extraction: Breaking The Chitin Wall
The first step to understanding why your powder is failing you is to understand Chitin.
Mushrooms are not vegetables; they are fungi.
Their cellular structure is closer to a lobster shell than a spinach leaf.
Here is the truth: The benefit you want : sharp focus, deep sleep, bulletproof immune system... all lies behind a wall. Literally.
Chitin is one of the strongest biological polymers in nature. It forms the exoskeletons of crustaceans (crabs, lobsters) and the cell walls of mushrooms.
Here is the problem: Humans do not produce the enzyme (chitinase) in sufficient quantities to break this down.
When you consume a raw mushroom or a basic ground powder (even if it says organic), your stomach acid bounces off that chitin wall. The bioactive gold which are the molecules of interest we are looking for in mushrooms (Beta-glucans,Triterpenes, Hericenones, Ergosterols…) remains locked inside the cell.
The Necessity of Extraction: This is where the distinction between "mushroom powder" and "mushroom extract" becomes paramount.
To make a powder, manufacturers often use "Hot Air Drying." This is a catastrophe for chemistry.
- Heat exposure destroys: Prolonged exposure to heat (60°C+) degrades sensitive compounds
- Grinding oxides : Increasing the surface area by grinding exposes the molecules to oxygen, turning active Triterpenes into inactive dust.
- Rehydration is less efficient: Biology happens in the liquid phase. When you take a dried powder, your body must expend energy to rehydrate it before it can even attempt absorption, and this process is extremely complex allowing only part of the active compounds to be effectively absorbed before they leave your body.
This photo was taken in our laboratory and shows 99% pure Hericenone D, one of the key bioactive molecules that makes Lion’s Mane of scientific interest in research related to cognition and brain support. This compound is extraordinarily rare and expensive (approximately €40,100 per gram), making it more valuable than gold. While one might assume that consuming such a highly concentrated pure molecule would be beneficial, the reality is quite different. In its solid (powder) form, as shown here, Hericenone D is poorly soluble and would largely pass through the digestive system without being absorbed. For this molecule to become biologically active, it must first be solubilized. In research settings, this requires the use of DMF (dimethylformamide), a powerful molecular solvent capable of dissolving highly resistant molecular structures, far beyond what human digestion can achieve. DMF is also highly toxic and strictly unsuitable for human consumption. But that's a good exemple of why bioavailability and formulation matter more than molecular quantity or purity alone.
3 - A Scientific Analysis of Delivery Forms
Before spending a dollar to support your biology with supplements, you must first understand Solubility.
Bioactive molecules in mushrooms have different "keys" to unlock them. You cannot use the same solvent for everything. This is where 90% of products fail as they use a single extraction (usually just hot water) and miss half the spectrum.
Given this, the vehicle in which you consume your mushrooms dictates the therapeutic potential. Let’s examine the pharmacokinetics and practical pros and cons of the most common forms.
3.1 Liquid Extracts: The Bioavailability Champion
Liquid extracts are widely regarded in the scientific community as the most bioavailable form of herbal / Fungi supplementation. This is particularly true for older adults. Powdered supplements can be more demanding on the body’s elimination pathways, particularly when taken in high amounts or by individuals with sensitive or compromised renal function. Because powders must first be digested, dissolved, and filtered before their compounds become available, they may increase metabolic and renal workload, leading to discomfort. Liquid extracts, on the other hand, present bioactive compounds in an already solubilized form, which can ease absorption and reduce unnecessary physiological strain.

Liquid extracts, don’t wait to reach the stomach to being absorbed. They are utilized as soon as they inter your mouth sublingually (under the tongue), allowing for transmucosal absorption. The oral mucosa is rich in capillaries, allowing compounds to bypass stomach and liver which can lead to a faster and higher concentration of bioactives in the bloodstream.

High-quality liquid extracts often utilize multi-extraction methods. For example:

Water extraction isolates water-soluble compounds like beta-glucans (often promoted for their benefits on immunity).

Ethanol extraction isolates lipid-soluble compounds like triterpenes (crucial for Reishi’s calming effects or Lion’s Mane’s nerve growth factor stimulation).

Both water and alcohol are liquid solvents. Maintaining the extract in this form preserves the distinct solubilities of water- and lipid-soluble compounds within a stable solution.

Liquid extracts offer additional advantages, including eliminating the difficulty of swallowing large capsules (dysphagia) and enabling far more precise titration. Dosage can be adjusted drop by drop to suit individual needs, daily state, and personal physiology. After all, a 50 kg yoga teacher typically doesn’t require the same dose as a 100 kg rugby player.
3.2 Powdered: The Versatile Workhorse
First thing, there is powder and powder on the market. If you are looking at Raw mushroom powder (Also called biomass powders) just move away. This is just the mushroom (and often the grain it grew on) dried and ground up. It is cheap and largely ineffective due to the chitin issue (if you’re taking a mushroom coffee, you’re that’s probably exactly what you are taking).
Then, there is powdered extracts. These are liquid extracts that have been spray-dried back into a solid form. It is crucial to distinguish these from ground mushroom powder we mentioned before. Great quality powdered extracts is very difficult to manufacture due to a few mechanism we will see below.

If the powder is a true powdered extract (look for "extraction ratio" on the label), the chitin has been broken down more or less successfully depending on the industrial process used. Once ingested, the powder must dissolve in the stomach. While this introduces a slight delay, the bioavailability remains high… but only for certain compounds ! Remember the lab uses case we talked about with solid forms of Hericenone? Resolubilizing some molecules can be particularly challenging. This is particularly true in your body where the what you ingest only spends a limited amount of time before leaving your body.
- Another issue is how these powders are made. Most rely on spray-drying, a process that exposes the extract to very high temperatures, even if only for a short time. The problem? Many of the active molecules we actually care about (triterpenes, cordycepin, erinacines, hericenones...) are fragile and heat-sensitive. So by the time the powder is finished, a significant part of these compounds may already be degraded. In other words, you’re often paying for a powder that sounds concentrated on the paper, but that is largely biologically inactive.

A fact that is often overlooked is that powdered extracts usually require additives, most commonly maltodextrin. It’s added to prevent the extract from sticking to the machinery. The downside is that maltodextrin breaks down very quickly into glucose. Because of this, eating large amounts of products with maltodextrin can cause a fast rise in blood sugar, especially for people with diabetes or insulin resistance. Since it is rapidly digested and absorbed, excessive intake can also contribute to weight gain, reduced insulin sensitivity, and higher blood lipids if the diet and lifestyle don’t balance it out.
- The real advantage of powders is their stability. When stored correctly, they are highly resistant to oxidation and degradation over time. This format is also ideal for habit stacking, easily mixed into a morning smoothie, oatmeal, or coffee.
3.3 Capsules: The Convenient Standard
Capsules are essentially powdered extracts encased in gelatin or vegetable cellulose.
Very practical and easy to manifacture, they offer the most consistent dosing as there is no measuring involved. And the earthy and bitter taste found in potent extracts is completely masked.
So they share the same pros and cons as powders, except that when you swallow a mushroom capsule, you’re not only taking mushrooms but also... the capsule ! and with it, very often:

Excipients whose role isn’t always obvious to the consumer (magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide, etc.).

A coating (gelatin or HPMC), sometimes sensitive to heat or difficult to digest.

And capsules that can stick together or even melt if stored somewhere a bit warm.
But the real down of capsules can be their breakdown time. The body must first dissolve the capsule shell (20–30 minutes) before accessing the extract. For individuals with low stomach acid (hypochlorhydria), which becomes more common with age, the dissolution of the capsule can be inefficient, potentially reducing the total absorbed dose compared to a pre-dissolved liquid.
3.4 Gummies and Functional Foods (Coffee/Chocolate) : The Candy Dilemma
This is the fastest-growing segment of the market, yet it is often the most problematic from a rigorous scientific standpoint.
- The dosage issue: To make a mushroom gummy taste like candy, manufacturers must use significant amounts of sugar, pectin, and flavorings. This leaves very little physical space for the mushroom extract. The manufacturing process for gummies involves high heat to set the gelatin or pectin. This thermal stress degrades delicate bioactive compounds like terpenes.
- Heat Sensitivity: The manufacturing process for gummies and functional coffees often involves high heat. As explained previously, this can degrade certain heat-sensitive compounds like proteins and specific vitamins found in the fungi.
- Absorption: While sugar can spike insulin and potentially shuttle nutrients into cells, the high sugar content competes with the health goals of many users (e.g., blood sugar management, inflammation reduction). Furthermore, more complex food matrix requires significant digestion to release the mushroom compounds.
3.5 A Note on the "10:1" Ratio Lie
Marketing teams love to put "10:1 Extract" on the label. They claim it takes 10kg of mushrooms to make 1kg of powder / extract.
Most manufacturers extract with water, throw away the solids (containing actives molecules), and then spray-dry the remaining water. You are getting a concentrated sugar (beta-glucan) rush, but you lost some of the specific medicinal compounds.
We also believe in the entourage effect: in mushrooms as in plants, it’s the interaction between molecules that creates real effectiveness — not a single number printed on a label, obtained through questionable methods and often promoted against all logic.
Many brands promote extracts “standardized to 30% polysaccharides.” But:

This number says nothing about what kind of polysaccharides they are. These can come from the mushroom itself (in that case they are β-glucans 1-3/1-6)… but also from the growing substrate or from maltodextrin added during spray-drying. You can guess the rest: the numbers are very often misleading — intentionally or not.
- Some mushrooms work through other compounds than polysaccharides: hericenones and erinacines for Lion’s Mane, cordycepin for Cordyceps, etc. Yet some sellers highlight a percentage that is completely irrelevant, counting on the consumer’s lack of expertise. Worse: with the explosion of new brands these past years, many sellers themselves lack the minimum scientific understanding to interpret these numbers.

4 - How to choose the Mushroom Protocol that fits you best in 2026
You have the agency to change your biology. Intelligence is the ability to get what you want out of life, and that starts with a brain that works.
Here is how to launch your new protocol:
1. The Purge: Go to your pantry. Look at your mushroom supplements.

If it's a powder in a bag that doesn't mention "Dual Extraction": Bin it.

If it's a gummy: Give it to your kids (or bin it).

If it's a "Mushroom Coffee": Enjoy it as coffee, not medicine.
2. The Acquisition: Secure a Liquid Dual-Extract (Tincture).

Be wary of gummies or coffees that market themselves as "mushroom supplements."
Treat them as fun, functional treats rather than your primary source of medicinal intake.
